Watching
the progress of our DRP Poll, we decided to head for the track early. The poll majority
was for starting early. As memory serves, ProSpeed was always at the track venue, the Manila Harbour
Centre, well before the participants. To our surprise, this wasn't the case that
day. Upon arrival, we noticed only a handful of
cars. Two of which were all the way from Baguio! Some of the ProSpeed workers were
already present and had helped finish setting up the sponsor banners and ad boards. The PMA timing system was also ready.
We were told by one of the organizers that they will be starting the event later than
before, since participants arrive later in the afternoon. As a matter of fact, the
"big wigs" of ProSpeed
didn't arrive until after 2pm. Personally, this was a very wise decision. Why wait around
all day if you KNOW that people will show up at 3pm?
One other change, with the efforts of P.A.D.
(the Philippine Association of Drag Racers), was the now standard
placement of the start line and return road route. Those with race cars no longer have to
deal with driving all the way around the harbour centre to return to the pits.
Tech inspections were more strict, as witnessed by most of Team
Bolt-On Performance. (Yes, people, your batteries MUST be properly
secured!) Every car was inspected prior to running on the track. Those who
didn't comply with the regulations, had to rectify the problem before getting clearance,
without which, wouldn't be allowed to race. Obivuously, this move was to ensure a safe
environment for both spectators and participants. Thankfully, as long as you don't have a
loose battery mount, seat brackets or missing lug nuts, you'd easily pass the inspection.
Time trials officially began at 3:30pm, ending 6:30pm. After
a short break (?), elliminations started at 8:30pm.
Elliminations went on fairly smoothly. A few re-runs were
made due to some timing and scoring problems, but otherwise, things moved accordingly.

As mentioned in our Email, ProSpeed
hired the services of organizers to help put on a better show that participants can better
enjoy the events. They mentioned this in the driver's meeting and explained that this was
a "business decision". Since we don't know the true nature of that business
decision, I'm sure it would be safe to assume that it was a good one. But...
After talking to several participants, it seems that some of
the officials were less than understanding to the needs of a drag racer. This might stem
from the fact that these people have backgrounds in other fields of motorsports. Our
recommendation is that these officials should brush-up on drag racing rules and standards
as well as its unique terminology (yes, terms are different from rallying and
circuit racing).
All in all, despite sporadic rains that drenched participants
prior to the start of the event, run in's with the tech inspector and head marshalls, the
estimated 40+ participants put on a good show. ProSpeed has shown its
dedication to its participants by trying new avenues to provide everyone with events that
are safer and more enjoyable to watch. Keep it up!
