Mariners Win Shot
at Japanese Star

The battle for seven-time Japanese League batting champ Ichiro Suzuki was won by the Seattle Mariners on Thursday. The Mariners paid $13.125 million for the right to negotiate with Suzuki for 30 days. Suzuki is a career .353 hitter in nine seasons.
