Premiering on CBS in the Fall of 1967, "The Herculoids" was a true departure for Hanna-Barbera and Saturday morning cartoons in general. The program was set in a distant galaxy on the planet Quasar, where King Zandor, his wife Tara, and their son Dorno defend the planet from invaders alongside a group of bizarre creatures, The Herculoids. These creatures consist of Zok, a flying dragon capable of firing powerful laser rays from his eyes and tail; Tundro the Tremendous, a ten-legged rhinoceros whose horn serves as a cannon; Igoo, a huge and incredibly strong gorilla-type rock being; and Gloop and Gleep, two bloblike, odd-voiced creatures who can assume any shape or size. Mike Road and Don Messick voiced almost all of the characters. Most of the very striking designs for "The Herculoids" were drawn by Alex Toth. "Zartan" and "Zandor" were the shows working titles, and 39 episodes were produced.
