Frank Black Jumps Labels for New LP
This is nothing new for the man's solo career, which has seen his seven
post-Pixies albums-- including Dog in the Sand-- released on four
different labels, with another available only through a website-direct
special. What Are Records? tells us we can expect the new album in late
January, 2001. The record sees Pixies guitarist Joey Santiago, and Eric
Drew Feldman (producer of Black's self-titled debut and Teenager of
the Year) as part of its line-up, though it is rumored that recent
mainstay Nick Vincent will produce this time out, and that the album
will again be recorded live to two-track.
More Tour Troubles for Elliott Smith
Another hitch in the campaign trail is that Grandaddy have been forced
to cancel their appearance at shows in Denver (November 6th) and Idaho
(November 8th). "No, it's not the usual rock n' roll reasons-- mineral
water not cold enough, dressing room not big enough, towels not properly
folded to specification," Grandaddy's web site reports. "Surprisingly
enough, there's a perfectly good reason this time." The band is set to
tape a session for England's "Later with Jools Holland" television show.
According to Elliott Smith's official web site, the band will rejoin him
for the rest of the tour. The remaining dates with Grandaddy opening are:
10/24 - Asheville, NC - Music Zone
Belle & Sebastian's Stevie Jackson Readies Solo Project Belle and Sebastian's members' side-project mania continues, for better or worse. According to an interview in the fall issue of (what else?) Chickfactor, Stevie Jackson will follow the lead of Belle and Sebastian alumnus Stuart David (Looper) and current member Isobel Campbell (Gentle Waves) with his own side-project, Stevie Reverb. In describing his LP, tentatively titled Reverberations of the Mind, Jackson said, "I'm not sure if it's what the world needs right now-- another Belle and Sebastian related album with a sticker saying so in front." Expect the album, sticker and all, to hit stores in February 2001. No label was mentioned, but if the other Belle & Sebastion side-projects are any indication, Stevie will stay with the Jeepster Records family.
New Atari Teenage Riot EP to Feature Lots of Rage According to the website for Alec Empire's Digital Hardcore label, Atari Teenage Riot, the group that uses angry riot slogans as song titles, will be releasing an new EP on November 6th, simply entitled Rage. The EP features remixes of "Too Dead for Me," a song from their 1999 release 60 Second Wipeout, along with a video directed by John Hillcoat. As an added bonus, the title track features guitarist Tom Morello from Rage, packing more rage into Rage. A remix version also includes the Arsonists' MC Destroy taking over on the mic. Apparently, it's just like carrying a grenade with the pin loose. Except nobody cares if you drop it.
Alkaline Trio in the Studio and on Tour According to their website, Alkaline Trio is set to go back into the studio this week to record the follow-up to this year's Maybe I'll Catch Fire. After the decision to leave the ska-heavy Asian Man Records, the Trio has signed with the more suitable pop/punk-oriented Vagrant label. Additionally, the band plans to record a 7" for the crazy pop enthusiasts at Lookout! Records. Alkaline Trio is set to record outside of Minneapolis at Pachyderm Studios with Matt Allison, who also produced Maybe I'll Catch Fire. After recording, Alkaline Trio will show just how tough they are when they embark on a non-stop two-week east coast tour with their always surly buddies, Hot Water Music. Tour dates are as follows:
11/4 - Atlanta, GA - Echo Lounge
