The final full-field event of the Senior Tour season takes place this week, with players using the SBC Senior Classic as a final chance to reach the top 31 on the money list and an invitation to next week's Tour Championship. Gary McCord leads a pack trying to cross the top-31 hurdle.

U.S. tries to continue dominance in Japan
Annika Sorenstam leads a 12-member squad of players from the U.S. LPGA Tour into Japan this week for the Cisco World Ladies Challenge. The team competition pits the U.S. team against 12 players from the Japan Tour in match play. The U.S. has won 19 of the previous 21 years.

Torrance torrid with new ball
European Ryder Cup captain Sam Torrance sounds like he's ready to shoot a commercial. Thanks to a new ball he's using, Torrance carded a 7-under 65 Thursday to share the Italian Open first-day lead with Eamonn Darcy, Van Phillips and Benoit Teilleria.

Six weeks away from tournament golf didn't change a thing on the PGA Tour, where Tiger Woods once again showed the rest of the field how to play. Woods birdied his first five holes on the way to a 9-under 63 and a share of the first-round lead with Steve Flesch. Woods is seeking his fourth consecutive victory and 10th win of 2000.

Muehr starts quickly
at Tour Championship

Michael Muehr shot a 5-under 67 on Thursday to grab a one-shot lead after the first round of the Buy.com Tour Championship. Muehr, No. 36 on the money list, is hoping for a big week to vault into the top 15 and secure a PGA Tour playing card for 2001. He is just one of 11 players under par after the first day.
