MaliVai Washington

 Tennis Analyst

MaliVai (Mal) Washington first appeared on ESPN in 1996 while still an active player on the ATP Tour and now works frequently on the network's extensive tennis schedule. Knee injuries forced his premature retirement after he enjoyed playing on both the collegiate and professional levels for over 10 years. In addition to the ATP Tennis Masters Series, Washington works for ESPN at the Australian Open and the United States' Davis Cup matches as an analyst or courtside reporter.

In 1989, while attending the University of Michigan, he finished his sophomore year ranked the NCAA men's singles number one player. In 1992, Mal reached his highest singles ranking of his pro career at number 11. In addition to four career ATP victories (Memphis and Charlotte in 1992, Ostrava in 1994 and Bermuda in 1996), he played in nine other finals. Most notable among these were in 1995 when he defeated then-top ranked Andre Agassi in the semifinals of the German Open and in 1996 when he reached the finals at Wimbledon and played Richard Krajicek.

Born, June 20, 1969, Washington is also the founder of the "MaliVai Washington Kids Foundation," which provides tennis lessons to children who otherwise would never be exposed to the sport.
