Larry Beil

ESPN SportsCenter anchor

Larry Beil joined ESPN in March 1995 as a SportsCenter anchor. He primarily co-hosts the 6:30 p.m. ET SportsCenter, and beginning in September 1998, also hosts ESPN's college football scoreboard shows and halftime updates each Saturday, including Residence Inn College GameDay and Residence Inn College GameNight.

Since coming to ESPN, Beil has also provided play-by-play on college football, men's college basketball and the Arena Football League. In 1997, he hosted ESPN Radio's inaugural College Football GameDay for eight hours each Saturday (11 a.m. to 7 p.m.) with analysts Mel Kiper, Jr. and Beano Cook.

Prior to joining ESPN, Beil was a weekend sports anchor and sports reporter for KTVU-TV in Oakland, Calif. from 1989-95. While at the Fox affiliate, Beil was also a play-by-play commentator for San Francisco-area college basketball teams (California, Stanford, San Francisco, and others), and also served as a freelance college basketball commentator for ESPN and SportsChannel Pacific. He also guest-hosted a nationally syndicated radio sports talk show, Sports Byline USA.

Before his Bay Area stint, Beil worked in Honolulu at KGMB-TV (1982-89), serving the last three years as sports director. From 1986 to 1989, he was the voice of the University of Hawaii football and basketball teams.

Beil was raised in the Bronx, N.Y. before moving to Hawaii with his family at the age of 17. He's a 1982 graduate of the University of Hawaii-Manoa (Honolulu) with a degree in journalism.

Born Jan. 7, 1961, Beil and his wife Sharla (a former professional hula dancer and Hawaiian Airlines flight attendant) have two daughters.
