Kyle Petty

 Auto Racing Commentator

NASCAR Winston Cup driver Kyle Petty has served as a commentator on NASCAR Busch Series races for ESPN since 1994. In 1997, he moved from pit road reporting to serving as an analyst in the booth where his racing insights and sense of humor are better utilized. One of the very few athletes to work consistently as a commentator in their sport while still active, the popular and unconventional Petty is the son of racing legend Richard Petty. His best career finish in the NASCAR Winston Cup points standings was fifth, in 1992 and '93.

Petty joined the Winston Cup circuit in 1979. His first win came in 1986 in his 170th start, the Miller High Life 400 at Richmond Raceway. With that win, he became the first third-generation driver to win a Winston Cup race, having successfully followed his grandfather, Lee, and father into the sport. Kyle entered the 1999 campaign with seven career wins.

Petty -- who is also well known for not fitting the conventional image of a racer with a pony tail, earring and an outspoken nature -- is a native of Randleman, N.C., and was born June 2, 1960. He is married and has two children. His son Adam was killed in a racing accident in May 2000.
