NHL play-by-play commentator

Dave Ryan joined ESPN2 as a National Hockey League commentator in September 1996. Since 1997, he has served as the sideline reporter for ESPN's Big Ten college football games, called select college basketball contests, hosted a college baseball tournament selection show and provided play-by-play analysis on a variety of tennis events, MLB games, and softball games. In 1997, he called the crossover event during the inaugural Winter X-Games, in which athletes competed in both summer and winter extreme sports.

Ryan made his ESPN, Inc. debut in March 1996, calling the ATP Tennis Tour on ESPN International. That summer, Ryan called the RHI Roller hockey Game of the Week on ESPN2.

Prior to joining ESPN, Ryan served as sports director at WNSS-AM in Syracuse, N.Y. (1995-1997). He also served as the weekend sports anchor at WSTM-TV in Syracuse, N.Y. (1991-92) and later became the sports director (1992-97). While at WSTM-TV Ryan earned a New York State Broadcasters Association award in 1992 for his investigation into the suspension of a Syracuse athlete.

As a weekend sports anchor at WBOY-TV in Clarksburg, W.V. from 1990-91, Ryan covered local events at West Virginia University athletics. He also worked as a sportscaster and performed play-by-play duties for the West Virginia "MetroNews" radio network (1989-90).

Currently, Ryan broadcasts Syracuse University football games (sideline reporter), men's and women's basketball games (play-by-play), men's and women's soccer matches (play-by-play), men's lacrosse games (play-by-play) and women's volleyball games (play-by-play). He also teaches a weekly sports reporting class at Syracuse University as an Adjunct Professor.

Ryan earned a communications degree from Syracuse University in 1989. He provided play-by-play for select Orangemen events on the campus radio station, WAER, and garnered a New York State Broadcasters Association award for outstanding coverage of the 1989 Big East men's basketball tournament.

Before going to Syracuse, Ryan founded his high school's first radio station in 1984. He worked at the station for two years before graduation.

A native of New York, N.Y., Ryan was born June 20, 1967. He is married and has one child.
