Following
the success of the live-action "Batman" series in early 1966,
Hanna-Barbera quickly responded with their own superhero entry.
The final concepts and designs for "Space Ghost" were created
by Alex Toth, guided by Joe Barbera and CBS executive Fred Silverman. Space
Ghost is an interplanetary crime-fighter who draws his powers from his Inviso-belt
and armband rays. He travels in the Phantom Cruiser with teen-age wards Jan
and Jace and their space monkey, Blip. Toth also created a colorful galaxy
of villains for Space Ghost (voiced by famed announcer Gary Owens) to square
off against. The show ran for two seasons on the CBS Saturday morning line-up,
with the back-up cartoon Dino Boy.
