Woods' season makes for more alternates

HONOLULU -- Looks like finishing second could pay off for Ernie Els.

Els, who has finished second in the three major golf tournaments this year, is a runaway leader for the first alternate spot in the PGA Grand Slam of Golf.

Tiger Woods' victories in the U.S. Open and British Open opens the four-man Grand Slam field to the top point-getter in the majors.

Should Woods win the final major of the year, the PGA Championship, the fourth Grand Slam spot would go to the player with the second highest point total. At this juncture, it's Tom Lehman with 205 points. Fred Couples is third with 195 points.

The bad news for the Grand Slam participants is that Woods has won the last three Grand Slam titles.

The 36-hole match-play tournament will be played Nov. 21-22 at Kauai's Poipu Bay Resort.
