Ed McCaffrey and Rod Smith have formed one of the NFL's most productive receiver tandems over the past three years, combining for five 1,000-yard seasons with the Broncos, yet the performance has led to just one Pro Bowl invitation for McCaffrey in 1998. Undeterred, Smith and McCaffrey are again near the head of the class in 2000. Their 1,248 yards lead the AFC and are second in the league to Issac Bruce and Torry Holt (1,264) of the pass-happy Rams. "I cringe when I see Rod go down because I know
if he were to get hurt, a team could double-team me and try to take me out of the game," McCaffrey said. "I think the same is true for Rod."

Injuries are part of the game and so are surgeries for guard Mark Schlereth. Schlereth, who has now had 28 operations, had arthroscopic surgery on Monday to remove loose particles that have been bothering him for several weeks. Schlereth, 34, had surgery on the same knee at the start of training camp in July and was sidelined a month. Second-year pro Lennie Friedman will replace Schlereth in the starting lineup.
