DePaul freshman Brown eligible for season

 ESPN.com news services

CHICAGO -- DePaul freshman Andre Brown will be eligible to play for the Blue Demons this season after being certified as a Division I qualifier, the school announced Wednesday.

"Needless to say, we are excited about Andre being certified to play because he is an outstanding young man who has worked extremely hard to get to this point," DePaul coach Pat Kennedy said.

Brown, a 6-foot-9 forward, was a McDonald's All-American last season at Chicago's Leo High School. He averaged 23 points and 13 rebounds per game during his senior season.

DePaul is coming off a 21-12 season in which it reached the NCAA Tournament for first time in eight years.

Prized center says he's going to sign with New Mexico
ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. -- A 7-foot center from Los Angeles said he has committed to play basketball at the University of New Mexico.

Chad Bell would be the Lobos' first 7-footer since Daniel Santiago in 1997.

After visiting the past weekend, Bell said he planned to attend UNM. He had also been considering Memphis, Kentucky and North Carolina.

Fran Fraschilla, the Lobos' head coach, does not comment on recruiting matters, saying NCAA rules do not allow this until he has the player's signed scholarship papers in hand.

NCAA rules allow incoming players to sign scholarship papers for a one-week period beginning Nov. 8. Bell's signing would leave the Lobos with three open scholarships for their 2001-2002 team.

Colorado's starting center breaks hand
BOULDER, Colo. -- Colorado starting center Richard Fox broke his left hand during practice Tuesday and could be out 4-6 weeks.

The 6-foot-11 sophomore broke the third metacarpal on his non-shooting hand after catching his middle and ring fingers on another player during a team drill, coach Ricardo Patton said.

Fox will be able to practice with his hand in a cast for the next few weeks, Dr. Mike Brager said. Brager and the coaching staff said they hoped Fox might be able to play in the regular-season opener against Alaska-Fairbanks on Nov. 16.

"I had high expectations for myself during the preseason and felt like I had had four good practices up to this point," Fox said. "But by no means is this a devastating injury."

Portland's Lee says he's headed to Kansas
PORTLAND, Ore. -- Jefferson High School basketball star Michael Lee says he has committed to play for Kansas.

Lee, a 6-foot-2, 180-pound shooting guard from Portland, Ore., says he made his decision after attending a Jayhawks practice session last weekend at the university in Lawrence, Kan.

Lee said he was greeted warmly by Jayhawks coaches and fans.

"I really liked the coaches. They were honest and up front," he said. "It was a great situation for me. I knew the second day I was there I wanted to go there."

Lee said Kansas coach Roy Williams had swayed him from Oregon and Nevada with a promise to play the first season, rather than sit out as a redshirt.

Lee averaged 12 points a game for Jefferson and was an honorable mention all-state pick last season after he helped the Democrats to an undefeated season and the Class 4-A title.

NCAA Tournament games again set for pay-per-view
INDIANAPOLIS -- Out-of-market telecasts of the first three rounds of the men's NCAA basketball tournament this season will be offered on a pay-per-view basis under an agreement announced Tuesday with CBS Sports and DIRECTV.

For the third consecutive year, subscribers of the satellite TV service will be able to choose any game from the first three rounds that is not broadcast by their local CBS affiliate. Pricing and packaging will be announced later.

Gophers dismiss Ohnstad after second DUI
MINNEAPOLIS -- Minnesota guard Mitch Ohnstad was dismissed from the team Friday following his second drunken-driving arrest in 18 months.

Ohnstad was arrested Aug. 20 in Faribault, Minn., for speeding. According to police and court documents, he failed sobriety tests and was found to have a blood alcohol content of 0.15 percent, higher than the Minnesota legal limit of 0.10 percent.

Ohnstad faces three gross misdemeanor counts of driving under the influence and three misdemeanor counts of speeding, possession of a small amount of marijuana and possession of drug paraphernalia. He also was arrested for drunken driving in March 1999.

"Mitch has been dismissed from the team due to a pattern of repeat behavior that is unacceptable to student-athletes in our program," Gophers coach Dan Monson said in a statement. "Mitch is a fine young man, and we wish him well. He will remain on scholarship and retain that as long as he adheres to the university and policy guidelines set forth in his scholarship."

Ohnstad, a senior from Faribault, Minn., averaged 7.8 points per game in 28 games last season, including eight as a starter. He transferred from Cal Poly-San Luis Obispo after his freshman season.

"I accept full responsibility for my actions and support the decision that had to be made by coach Monson and his staff," Ohnstad said in a statement.
