Quarterback Brad Johnson may be playing in his second and final year with the Redskins. Contract negotiations between the player and the club broke off yesterday and Johnson's agent, Phil Williams, said on Wednesday the move "significantly reduces" the chances that Johnson will return to the Redskins next season, according to The Washington Post. "We've just decided to put everything off until March because we've been asked about it quite a bit, and this way no one has to ask us any more," Williams said.

Cornerback Darrell Green
could miss the next three weeks because of a calf injury, head coach Norv Turner announced on Tuesday. Green, who strained his right calf muscle in the first quarter of the Redskins' 10-3 win Sunday over Baltimore, has played in 125 consecutive games. Turner said Green will definitely miss next Sunday's game against Jacksonville, "And then it would be a week-to-week thing after that." ESPN.com's NFL Power Rankings
Defense has shaped up

Last season, the Redskins defense ranked 30th in the NFL, better only than the Browns. Obviously, improving the defense was a chief concern in the offseason, and owner Daniel Snyder has assembled the richest defense in NFL history. It's working. After beating the Ravens on Sunday, 10-3, the Redskins defense is ranked second in the NFL, behind New Orleans and just ahead of Buffalo in terms of yards allowed. Third-year linebacker Shawn Barber said the biggest difference is the faith players have in the play-calling of defensive coordinator Ray Rhodes. "It could be fourth-and-short, and he could call the prevent (defense), and I'd run it," Barber told the Washington Post. "I've bought into it. As players, we play what is called. This year, we got on the same page a lot faster."
