Cravenho, Marquis win Mods at Thompson

THOMPSON, Conn. (Oct. 15, 2000)

Jerry Marquis cliched the Mods title on Sunday night.

Tommy Cravenho of Raynham, Mass., and Jerry Marquis of Broad Brook, Conn., were the big winners Sunday at Thompson International Speedway.

Cravenho recorded his first Featherlite Modified Series, NASCAR Touring victory of the season when he won the 125-lap FMS portion of the 27th annual XTRA MART World Series of Speedway Racing on the 5/8ths-mile oval.

Marquis finished fifth in the Teddy Bear Pools/Longview RV Pontiac, which was good enough to secure his first Featherlite Modified Series championship. Marquis finished the season 36 points ahead of Reggie Ruggiero of Rocky Hill, Conn.

Cravenho, driving the BRE Racing/T&M; Landscape Chevrolet, passed former series champion Mike Stefanik on lap 106 of the 125-lap race and then held off Stefanik's furious challenge over the closing laps. Cravenho's margin of victory over Stefanik's ATC Dodge was .08 seconds, or about two feet. He averaged 64.581 mph in the event that was slowed by eight cautions for 44 laps.

It marked a remarkable comeback by Cravenho, who was forced to use a provisional starting position to start the race in 30th position. It was the third career series win for Cravenho. His first occurred at Thompson in 1995.

Ted Christopher of Plainville, Conn., finished third in the Wynn's Dodge, which was a Cretty Motorsports team car to Stefanik's ride. Defending series champion Tony Hirschman finished fourth in the Bear Motorsports Chevrolet.

Charlie Pasteryak, Polverari, John Blewett III, Jimmy Kuhn and Ted Riggott rounded out the top-10 finishers.

Marquis guaranteed himself the championship by finishing ahead of Ruggiero, who finished 12th. Rick Fuller of Auburn, Mass., the only other driver with a chance at the championship, finished 18th.

Marquis, Ruggiero and Fuller were involved in a multi-car accident on lap 64 when leader Mike Ewanitsko and second place Hirschman tangled on a restart. The chain reaction collected the top-3 point leaders, who were running third, fourth and fifth; as well as no less than five other cars. A track release said Ewanitsko, who had won the Bud Pole and earned the Gatorade Front Runner Award for leading the most laps, suffered a broken arm in the crash.

Fuller lost three laps in the pits. Marquis and Ruggiero made repeated pit stops to repair their cars.

Bob Polverari led on the lap 66 restart before giving way to Stefanik. Stefanik led until Cravenho chased him down for the win while Marquis knifed his way back through the field. Ruggiero, his car's handling affected by the incident, was unable to mount a challenge to Marquis.

In other feature events on Sunday, Mark Jenison and Scott Bronczyk won in NASCAR Strictly Stocks, Roger Godin the NASCAR Pro Stocks, Joey Payne Jr. in the NEMA Midgets, Chris Perley in the ISMA Supermodifieds and Eric Berndt in the NASCAR Sunoco Modifieds.

Featherlite title just reward for Fiore, Marquis
