Sawyer returns to his roots at Langley

Elton Sawyer will be returning to Langley Speedway this weekend to race in a late-model car once again.

Most NASCAR drivers like to spend their off weekends at home, and that is exactly what Elton Sawyer is doing.

The NASCAR Busch Series driver will be returning to Langley Speedway, in Hampton, Va., to compete in the I/Car 100 late model event on Saturday night. The 4/10-mile asphalt track is celebrating its 50th anniversary and wanted its hometown hero to be part of the festivities.

Although Sawyer has not actively competed in a late model in about 15 years, he left his mark at Langley. During the mid-1980s Sawyer earned three consecutive track championships and NASCAR Winston Racing Series Mid-Atlantic Region titles in 1984 and '85. He also has 82 victories at Langley.

To say the driver of the No. 98 Lysol Ford in the NASCAR Busch Series knows his way around Langley may be an understatement. But remembering how to drive a late model could be a different story.

"Late models don't have much horsepower, you have more car than motor," Sawyer said. "You almost have to get them sideways loose to go fast. I am going to get some practice in on Friday so I can be better prepared for the race Saturday."

Having Sawyer return to where he got his start is part of the season-long festivities Langley Speedway has put on to celebrate its half-century mark.

"We have been able to bring back many of our past promoters and drivers for weekend events," said Wayne Wyatt, general manager of the track. "This weekend is our grand finale and we are very excited to have Elton join us. Langley was his home track and he is also our biggest star who came out of here."
