Janikowski finally delivers to lift Raiders past Chiefs

NEXT GAME
Sun., Oct. 22 St. Louis 1:00 PM ET

Instant replay fails Chiefs
It was the kind of play that has made instant replay a part of the NFL: With the Chiefs driving in Oakland territory, looking for the go-ahead score in the fourth quarter, wide receiver Sylvester Morris appeared to fumble the ball just as his knee hit the ground. Charles Woodson recovered it for the Raiders. Head coach Gunther Cunningham challenged the call, but the challenge proved fruitless as the call stood. Thunderous booing from the fans in Arrowhead Stadium could not change the fact that it was a crucial play, and the Chiefs lost, 20-17.

Clayton: Former Chief steals show
Elvis Grbac and Rich Gannon were debated for two years at Arrowhead Stadium. Grbac, signed off the San Francisco roster in 1997, was brought in as the franchise quarterback at the tender age of 27. Then coach Marty Schottenheimer dubbed him the quarterback of the future, but he failed to completely grasp the present. Schottenheimer eventually called on Gannon.

  • Donahoe: Chiefs can't run
    Monday, October 16
The difference in a tight game was Oakland's ability to run the football and Kansas City's inability to do the same. The Raiders' running attack was two-pronged with Tyrone Wheatley and Napoleon Kaufman. Another key to the Raiders' offensive attack was the consistent scrambling of QB Rich Gannon. It seemed that whenever Oakland's offense was in trouble, Gannon would scramble and make a big play.

    from the CHIEFS MESSAGE BOARD
"Statistics can be very deceptive and meaningless – except the final score. … You can totally dominate your opponent, beat the hell out of them statistically, and still lose the game. What is the only meaningful stat? Wins and losses."
