| Tuesday, October 10 Ayers to handle top duties for 76ers | |||||
Associated Press PHILADELPHIA -- Philadelphia coach Larry Brown is taking some time off to recover from his coaching duties at the Olympics and will not accompany the 76ers on preseason road trips to Mexico City and Chapel Hill, N.C. Assistant coach Randy Ayers will be in charge of the team during those two games. Brown was an assistant coach for the U.S. Olympic team that captured the gold medal in Sydney last month. He flew home Oct. 2 for media day and jumped right into the Sixers' preseason workouts. "It's a long year," said Billy King, Philadelphia's general manger, who suggested the break. "The end goal is to have him as fresh as possible." Brown began his Olympic coaching duties Aug. 25 and traveled to Sydney for the tournament. The grueling travel and coaching schedule took its toll on him. "He's just tired," King said. "People don't realize how difficult that trip was." The 60-year-old Brown will coach the team in its preseason game in New York against the Knicks on Thursday night. The team will then travel without him to Mexico City to play the Washington Wizards on Saturday, and then go to Chapel Hill for a game against the Toronto Raptors on Monday. Brown is scheduled to rejoin the team for its game in Washington on Oct. 20. Ayers was a head coach at Ohio State from 1989-1997, compiling a 124-108 record. | ALSO SEE Iverson scores 15 as 76ers open preseason with a victory |
