Heredia will be back in 2001

The Athletics exercised a $3.3 million option Tuesday to keep right-hander Gil Heredia for the
2001 season. Heredia, 34, had a career-high 15 wins this past year and ranked
seventh in the AL with a 4.12 ERA. He was one of three 15-game
winners on the A's. Heredia has a 31-22 record and 4.30 ERA in 73 games, including 71 starts, in three years with the A's.
A's don't pick up option on Stairs
The Athletics said Monday they will not exercise the $4 million contract option for right fielder Matt Stairs next season. He will remain on the club's 40-man roster pending
salary arbitration. He is not eligible for free agency until after the 2001 season. Stairs, who earned $3.05 million this year, struggled after posting consecutive 100 RBI seasons. He batted .227 with 21 home runs and 81 RBIs in 143 games.
A team with staying power
These are not the 1997 Florida Marlins, who won the World Series one week and were auctioned off the next. These aren't the 1998 San Diego Padres, who won the National League pennant in October and were dismantled in November and December.
The A's are built for the long haul. There will be no wrecking ball taken to their roster
