The original Finley Golf Course in Chapel Hill, N.C., had served the school, its alumni and town well since its opening in 1949. In fact, the golf bug first bit Michael Jordan on these grounds. But by the early 1990s, the course was worn out and suffered from the onslaught of 50,000 rounds per year. Roger Perry approached Tom Fazio with a challenge, "Tom, we want you to blow it up and start over" The new Finley opened last November.

Golfers can get excitations an hour's drive south of Los Angeles in Newport Beach, an upbeat enclave where the common denominator is fun. This sunny seaside incubator has several high-end, daily-fee courses, many of them set back from the coast among rolling hills. Spring and fall are best, though golf is available year-round.

Site of the 2002 U.S. Open, the Black Course at Bethpage, the first publicly owned course to host the national championship, has reduced many top players to their knees. Sam Snead, who played an exhibition in 1940, is reported to have stalked off the course in disgust after his second shot sailed over the green into oblivion at the par-5 fourth. Too bad he didn't stick around to play the fifth. It's the best hole on the course.
