Vazquez headed to Japan

Right-hander Javier Vazquez
will join the caravan of all-stars who will tour Japan for Major League Baseball in November. Vazquez, 24, finished the season with a 11-9 record and a 4.05 ERA in team-leading 33 starts. He set career marks in wins, starts, innings pitched (217.2) and ranked sixth in the National League in strikeouts with career-best 196. He finished the season strong posting a 3-3 record in September with a 2.87 ERA in six starts striking out 52 in 47 innings. Twice during the month, he fanned 11 batters in a game, a personal high. Vazquez will join teammate Jose Vidro, both from Puerto Rico, to play in the All-Star Series 2000 which will consist of eight games scheduled between November 3-12 in Tokyo, Fukuoka, Osaka, and Nagoya, Japan. All eight games will feature a team of all-stars from Nippon Professional Baseball.
