Scouting Report
1999 Season After being cast off by the Orioles last winter, Willie Greene signed with the Blue Jays in an attempt to shore up their DH spot. He didn't respond well to what amounted to less than a part-time role and had his worst season in the majors.
Hitting, Baserunning & Defense Greene's only asset is a quick bat that sometimes puts a real charge into the ball. Making enough contact always has been a problem for him, though he does draw a good number of walks. Greene can handle fastballs on the inner half, so he rarely sees those pitches. Instead, he's easily fooled with offspeed breaking stuff. Greene is an adequate baserunner. He also rarely played the field for Toronto, but can fill in at third base or the outfield. His arm is solid.
2000 Outlook Toronto removed Greene from its 40-man roster shortly after the season ended. The Blue Jays will look elsewhere for a solution to their DH woes. He's still young enough to get another shot, but his career will be in jeopardy if he struggles mightily again.
