Scouting Report

1999 Season
Reggie Sanders came to the Padres in a blockbuster February trade with the Reds for slugger Greg Vaughn. Though he didn't fully replace Vaughn's 50 home runs and 119 RBI, Sanders stayed relatively healthy and finished with his best all-around numbers since 1995. He took a .300 average into September before a late slump dragged his average down to .285. After coming to town with a reputation as a fragile player, he held up for 133 games.

Hitting
Born and raised in South Carolina, Sanders is a hot-weather hitter. He's prone to slow starts and finishes, and almost always is at his best during the midsummer months. He has strong wrists and a quick bat, but can be lured into chasing pitches up and out of the strike zone. He refuses to cut down his swing with two strikes, which leads to high strikeout totals as well as a good number of two-strike homers. He's well-suited to hit third, where he often batted last year.

Baserunning & Defense
Sanders has excellent speed and uses it wisely. He reads pitchers' moves well and is capable of stealing in any situation. The move from artificial turf to grass seemed to rejuvenate him, as he ran more aggressively last year. He has the tools to play all three outfield positions. He spent most of last year in left, where he sometimes looked uncomfortable, after having spent most of his career in center or right. He has a strong, accurate arm.

2000 Outlook
The Padres picked up Sanders' option for 2000, and he'll be a fixture in their lineup as long as his health permits. He was hampered by his usual share of aches and pains last year, but wasn't sidelined for any extended periods. The Padres will be satisfied to get as much out of him this year as they did in '99.
