Scouting Report

1999 Season
Joe Girardi was supposed to be relegated to backup duty by Jorge Posada, but Girardi was too good defensively and ended up catching almost 40 percent of the time. His offensive decline continued, though he still delivered in key situations.

Hitting, Baserunning & Defense
Girardi can get around on fastballs, but he can be baited into pounding sinkers into the ground. He grounded into 16 double plays in just 209 at-bats last year. He also has trouble handling good sliders. He runs the bases well for a catcher, routinely takes the extra base and rarely makes a mental error. He has worked hard to become better than average at blocking balls in the dirt and still combines a plus arm with a quick release.

2000 Outlook
Manager Joe Torre successfully lobbied to have Girardi's contract option picked up for 1999, but the Yankees bid goodbye to Girardi as a free agent after the season. He wanted more playing time, not less, and will start for the Cubs, who signed him for three years and $5.5 million.
