Show Me Some Skin!

by Aaron Pava and Ankarino Lara, ZDNet Music
June 19, 2000

We all must agree that Winamp, the slim and powerful MP3 player, has warmed the hearts of many a music aficionado. Almost as important as the program itself, there is an endless collection of skins to decorate the desktop application. From the gothic drum of chamber bells to the fairy flutes of Gaelic charm, Winamp provides a style for your every music need. We know that many regular users haven't the time to peruse the hundreds of available skins on the Winamp web site, so to save you some time, we present you with our top ten Winamp skin choices for you to download. And remember, after you have made a decision, be sure to download some MP3s from ZDNet Music Downloads to test out your new look. Enjoy!

Major Tom
[ Designed by Steve Moss | Download Now ]

According to creator Steven Moss, Major Tom is an homage to the US space program and is derived from NASA's Apollo-era control consoles. The analog curvature of the equalizer and the rocket ship timekeeper are unique aspects definitely worthy of a top skin award. This skin seems to crave World War II ditties, such as Bob Hope, Bing Crosby, or The Andrews Sisters.

sg|darkfuture|r-mix
[ Designed by Ilmari Heikkinen | Download Now ]

Akin to the harrowing corridors of Nostromo in a Ridley Scott nightmare, sg|darkfuture|r-mix proves both futuristic and foreboding to the casual observer. Cold and alone, you face a bristling arsenal of switches and knobs. Although touching the console might produce the desired effect, loss of life or limb is a possibility too real to dismiss. The display is convoluted and confusing (and rightly so), as this skin hails from some unknown provenance foreign to this planet. A user beset by inherent distrust (and indeed of a weakened mind) will most certainly opt for a skin less grim. The distant din of a death metal concert resonates from the very gears that corrupt this reprehensible machine. For many, this darkness may scorch the very organs upon which they depend.

Fossil 2002
[ Designed by Jan-Torben Sott | Download Now ]

Fossil 2002 is a shiny, flat skin designed to look like the watch of the same name. Buttons and controls are ominously left unmarked, leaving the console with a bleak, anonymous gaze. Maybe this is what the devil's stereo receiver would look like, if the devil played music. Play your favorite Beatles tunes backward on Fossil 2002 to really appreciate this Winamp skin. Or perhaps the soothing sounds of sheet metal grinding against rough sandpaper would be appropriate?

Next: Can you show me some more skin?>
