Hot Picks for November 6 through November 12, 1997

Fantastic Four #1

Written by Scott Lobdell
Drawn by Alan Davis and Mark Farmer Marvel Comics

They're BAAAA-AAACK! After a year in the Franklinverse, the Fantastic Four has returned to the real world. And they're taking some well-deserved vacation time in Antarctica...until they have to rush off to Paris to plug up a dimensional breach that could destroy all reality! In other words, everything's back to normal for the first family of Marvel Comics.

The heroes have returned, and they've never been better than this. Alan Davis's artwork shines in this issue, as he brings everything from Kirbytech to subterranean monsters to Paris to life. The Fantastic Four hasn't looked this good in years.

Heroes Return 4 is available at our on-line store.

Gen13 #23

Written by Brandon Choi
Art by Al Rio
WildStorm Comics

Fairchild, Freefall, and Grunge have been shunted thirty years in the future, to a world where the D'Rahn are on the verge of wiping out the last vestiges of human resistance. The future Lynch has a doomsday device that can stop them -- at the cost of every human life on Earth. It's up to the time-tossed Gen13ers and the future members of the team to stop him, stop the D'Rahn, and return to their own time.

Superhero time travel stories are always fun, and this story is no exception. It's especially interesting to see what thirty years have done to the Gen13 cast -- though it's hard to believe Burnout would keep that ridiculous beard for three decades...

Gen13 #23 is available at our on-line store.

The Tenth 3

Creator and Penciller: Tony Daniel
Writer: Beau Smith
Inkers: Marlo Alquiza and Kevin Conrad
Image Comics

A mysterious man teleports to the Tenth, Espy, and Zorina, and asks them to come to Japan with him. They're skeptical...until he tells them that Rhazes Darkk is trying to spread his evil in the land of the rising sun. Which makes it a whole new ballgame. But what will they find when they get there? And how does Adrenalynn figure into the equation?

This issue cracks the action level up another notch, as we get an extended Adrenalynn flashback and the Tenth takes on a living forest! That's right, a living forest! What more can you ask from a comic?

The Tenth #3 is available at our on-line store.

Judgment Day #3

Written by Alan Moore
Pencils by Rob Liefeld, Marat Michaels, and Cedric Nocon
Inks by Jon Sibal, Lary Stucker, and Norm Rapmund
Flashbacks by Jeff Johnson, Dan Panosian, Rick Veitch, and Ian Churchill
Awesome Comics

The trial of Knightsabre comes to a close as Toby King unearths shocking new evidence that rocks the foundations of the Awesome Comics universe and introduces even more new characters and concepts. It ends with a hero disgraced, one team disbanded, and another reborn...but for the gritty details, you'll have to read the book!

Alan Moore is clearly having a blast on this series, as he mixes and matches bits of comic history and adventure fiction to create a whole new universe of super-heroes. On top of that, he creates a genuine mystery whose solution will leave you gasping. This is the book to read to get up to speed on the rest of the Awesome line.

Judgment Day #3 is available at our on-line store.

Voodoo #1

Written by Alan Moore
Pencils by Mike Lopez
Inks by Edwin Rosell
Image Comics

Priscilla, aka Voodoo, is a woman with a past who just got off the bus to New Orleans. And almost as soon as she arrives, she finds work as an exotic dancer. But things take a turn for the worse when the murder of someone she's never met promises to have a dangerous impact on her brand new life.

Alan Moore is all over the hot picks this week, isn't he? This comic mixes voodoo, magic, music, and the city of New Orleans -- which is a strange place even without any of the rest -- to kick off a bizarre and engrossing tale of innocence lost.

Voodoo #1 is available at our on-line store.

JLA: Paradise Lost #1

Written by Mark Millar
Drawn by Ariel Olivetti
Marvel Comics

Zauriel, the guardian angel in the eagle-host of Heaven who battled alongside the JLA a few months back, has sacrificed his immortality for the love of a mortal woman. The only problem is, she already has a boyfriend. And on top of that, Zauriel knows of a renegade angel's plans to wage war against Heaven and succeed where Lucifer failed. And that renegade wants the newly mortal Zauriel dead...

JLA is known for its epic scope, and this story continues in that tradition. Millar and Olivetti create a real atmosphere of menace as Zauriel tries to escape from the renegade angels and declare his love.

JLA: Paradise Lost #1 is available at our on-line store.

Moon Knight #1

Written by Doug Moench
Pencils by Tommy Lee Edwards
Inks by Robert Campanella
Marvel Comics>

As an archaeological expedition in Egypt uncovers fabulous treasures and wealth, Moon Knight returns to solve the mystery of the visions and signs he's been experiencing. What's that? Isn't Moon Knight dead, you say? Well, yes. They deal with that in this issue, too.

It's been quite a while since Moon Knight was last seen in the Marvel Universe, and it's good to see his familiar costume in the pages of a comic again!

The Darkness #9

Written by Christina Z and David Wohl
Art by Marc Silvestri and Batt
Top Cow Comics

The "Family Ties" crossover continues with part two, as Jamie Estacado goes down and Sara Pezzini delves deeper into the mystery of exactly who is trying to kill Jamie and seize the power of the Darkness. Once she learns the answer, though, she may not live long enough to do anything about it!

The mystery deepens and the plot thickens as some questions are answered and some new ones are raised. Add to that a widening conspiracy to bring down Jamie Estacado, and you've got a winner of a book on your hands!

The Darkness #9 is available at our on-line store.

Uncle Sam #1

Written by Steve Darnall
Painted by Alex Ross
Vertigo Comics

He's a delusional old homeless man, wandering the streets of a major metropolis muttering quotes from American history. Or he's a time traveler, flitting in and out of different eras. Or he just may be Uncle Sam, the embodiment of America's hopes and dreams. Whatever he is, no one is listening to him...and that could mean the end of everything.

This is a beautifully illustrated story that explores the darker side of America without losing sight of the nation's promise and potential. It's also a chance to see Alex Ross take on an entirely different sort of icon than the superheroes we're used to seeing from him.

Uncle Sam #1 is available at our on-line store.

Superman: The Man of Steel #75

Written by Louise Simonson
Drawn by Jon Bogdanove and Dennis Janke
DC Comics

Mxyzptlk is back, and this time he's got a serious fascination with death! That's right, death! Since Superman's been through it, Mxyzptlk decides to try it himself, as he creates the creature called "Badabingbadaboomsday" in the story that could only be called..."The Death of Mr. Mxyzptlk"!

You'll laugh, you'll cry, you'll groan at the awful puns in this story, as Lois and Clark try to explain death to Mxyzptlk with comical results!

Superman: The Man of Steel #75 is available at our on-line store.
