Gen13 Bootleg #14

by Thomas Miller

Publication Date: December 1997

MISSION BRIEF:

Gen13's normal, non-superpowered neighbors get involved in one of their fights with bad guys.

ROLL CALL:

STORY: Jeff Mariotte
PENCILS: Joe Phillips
INKS: Gerry Leach
COLORS: Joe Chiodo & Martin Jiminez
LETTERS: Bill O'Neil
COVER: Joe Phillips & Garry Leach

PROJECT GENESIS:

Claire and William Deitrich just want to retire to a quiet life. However, their neighbors happen to be Lynch and his Gen13 team, so peace and quiet aren't an option. The Deitrichs call the police and complain, which leads to an ex-I.O. agent named Hammersmith showing up to get revenge on Lynch.

The kids are away, so Hammersmith and his men are soon engaged in a battle with Lynch, Alex Fairchild, and Anna. Claire tries to help, and ends up becoming a hostage; Hammersmith and his men take refuge in the Deitrichs' home.

When the kids get back, everyone teams up to rescue the neighbors and stop the bad guys. Grunge uses his powers to enter the toilet and infiltrate the sewer system, and get into the house. He provides a distraction while the others smash in and fight the bad guys. Claire and William get into the act, too, and with ridiculous ease, Hammersmith and his clowns are defeated.

The Deitrichs and the Gen13 (especially Grunge) are all on friendly terms now, and neighborhood peace is ensured.

INTELLIGENCE REPORTS:

  • This one was silly, and yet, it showed us something different (if insignificant.)
  • Once again, Grunge was the center of attention.

TIDBITS:

  • Burnout: Does nothing exceptional this time.
  • Fairchild: At least she came up with the idea to have Grunge turn into Drano.
  • Freefall: Takes a more active role than Burnout in the fight.
  • Grunge: Has more to do this time than everyone else combined.
  • Rainmaker: Helps fight, but little else.

OFFICER OF THE DAY:

Grunge. Anybody who turns into Drano and flows through the sewer system deserves some kind of accolade.

UNDER SURVEILLANCE:

  • The artwork wasn't as crisp and clear (and realistic) as some would like, but it's far from the worst this title has ever seen.

FOR THE RECORD:

Hammersmith: "One of these days, Lynch, you'll get yours." Lynch: "I honestly don't even remember you, Hammersmith. Ten years ago, you say? Complete blank..."

FUTURE MANEUVERS:

After a sudden attack on the team, Roxy is near death - and it's up to her spirit to figure out who planned the attack.
